I’ll freely admit that sketch based
comedy doesn’t usually top my ‘must see’ list.
I think it’s a tricky beast to get right and it often sees
the same pat situations being revisited time and time again.
Nevertheless, I took a trip to see ‘The
Ugly Kid’ and did they ever prove me wrong!
Their 50-minute sketch show, performed in the warmest venue
encountered so far, raised many a giggle from my cynical self.
Sketches ranged from the straightforward to the somewhat
surreal and every single one hit its comedy mark.
Each situation is well-paced, moving seamlessly from one
scene to the next. It’s
also superbly acted as the performers change persona before your
very eyes without the use of elaborate costumes or wigs (although
the odd role of sticky tape is put to magnificent use).
This is excellent mid-afternoon comedy for
grown ups. I suggest
you grab yourself a ticket as soon as possible and give this
talented quartet of Will Andrews, Susan Calman, Greg McHugh and Leah
MacRae a look-in.
