An eye catching title but Andrew
O’Neill’s brand of comedy was a let down. There was the
recurring character, the 5 year old David who was dying from a brain
tumour. The audience are asked to view the performance through the
child’s view. A bizarre set up and true a personified universe did
make an appearance to take the idea forward.
However, in between there was some very
ordinary material on topics such as the smoking ban, terrorism,
vegetarianism and young love. Delivery and timing are essential
elements of the comedian’s art. Too often the delivery was
laboured and he just didn’t hit the moment. Jokes fell flat
particularly in the second half of his routine.
After a bright opening when I felt the
audience were with him, their response fell away as the laughter
dried up.
